FREETOWN — The Freetown Board of Selectmen heard that new state zoning laws could override local control while raising safety concerns about a proposed Lakeville gravel pit. Town Planner Nancy told the board the state budget bill signed July 9 left a new "practical difficulty" variance standard undefined, warning it "could expose the town to litigation." Town Administrator Deborah L. Pettey said a proposed 167-acre gravel pit at 30 Howland Road in Lakeville would remove 6.5 million cubic yards of material over 10-plus years, with truck routes potentially passing the high school and Freetown's Four Corners.
The board separately voted unanimously, with Selectman Chad S. Carvalho abstaining, to ratify a $290,000 sale of a town lot on Alexandria Drive, approved a $136,000 salt shed purchase, and awarded paving contracts totaling $738,073 to Daniel Asphalt Services and PJ Keating Company. Somerset Harbor Master Mr.
Gannam also presented Freetown's first draft mooring regulations, telling the board, "I need something on the water."
