Freetown Selectmen Visit Elementary School, Outline Fire Station and Bridge Projects

FREETOWN — May 28, 2024 — Freetown Select Board members visited the elementary school to field student questions on town projects and civic life. Select Board members Jared Zager and Carlos Lopes appeared at Freetown Elementary School on May 28 without the third board member, identified as Selectman Matthews, who was absent. The pair outlined active priorities including a fire station expansion to add sleeping quarters and equipment bays, bridge repairs on Chase Road and North Main Street, fiber-optic internet buildout, and a proposed pickleball court at Hathaway Park. Lopes said the board had placed a dedicated FES facilities fund on the town meeting warrant, including a potential solar installation on the school roof. On school safety, both members confirmed a recent police-department survey showed overwhelming resident support for a school resource officer, with Lopes saying the board was now moving to a cost-and-feasibility phase. The South Coast Rail start date, Lopes said, remains unconfirmed after repeated delays.
