Freetown Select Board Members Answer Student Questions at Elementary School

FREETOWN — May 12, 2025 — Freetown Select Board members visit elementary school, field questions on train noise and library grant. Select Board members Jared Zerger and Steven Lopes — both recently re-elected to three-year terms — answered more than a dozen student questions at Freetown Elementary School on May 12, touching on police radio tower upgrades, a proposed new library backed by a federal grant, and persistent MBTA commuter rail noise. Lopes, who chairs the library and Council on Aging subcommittee, described the federal grant as identifying the town's existing libraries as undersized with no running water or event space, and floated a concept combining a new library and Council on Aging facility. On the rail, Zerger acknowledged the board had little say in the original decision and said members are working with the Healey administration and state representatives to address quality-of-life concerns, calling the current situation "one-sided." A student suggestion for a town community garden was well-received, with Zerger saying he would consult the town's community programming coordinator, identified only as Kylie, about next steps.
